Gamescom 2024: The Latest Games and Gaming Reveals

The coveted 2024 Gamescom expo recently took place in Cologne, Germany, and brought together gamers, developers, and industry legends worldwide. From the 21st to the 25th of August, thousands of fans got to thrill in the power of gaming at the Koelnmesse Expo Hall where the latest gaming news, titles, and projects were debuted. The 2024 Gamescom event revealed that it witnessed record-breaking numbers this year with more than 335,000 visitors from around 120 countries on-site in Cologne while reaching a new international record with more than 310 million digital engagements.

For five incredible days, Gamescom brought together fans to enjoy demos, trailers, releases, cosplay, and more. Robert Habeck, Vice Chancellor and Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Climate Action, Hendrik Wüst, Minister-President of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Henriette Reker, Mayor of Cologne, and Chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of Koelnmesse, all welcomed the representatives of the games industry and repeatedly acknowledged Gamescom’s key role in highlighting Germany as a game location.

Biggest Reveals in Gaming

 

One of the best parts about Gamescom is the exciting new game releases. Fans were thrilled with the number of new games that were teased at the expo. Borderlands 4 made headlines with a cinematic teaser to show that the game will be released sometime in 2025 – this is right on the trail of the movie being released earlier this year. 

 

 

The expo also showed gameplay from the upcoming Batman: Arkham Shadow VR game - set to be a first-person action game exclusively for the Meta Quest 3 - and also released gameplay from the atmospheric adventure game, Will: Follow the Light, which comes to PC and consoles in 2025.

 

Another massive reveal was a gameplay teaser of the popular Dune: Awakening survival-crafting shooter game – ramping up anticipation massively after the release of the second Dune movie this year as well.

Fans also got to see exclusive gameplay trailers for the gun-fu brawler SPINE and the official launch trailer for the action RPG rooted in Chinese mythology, Black Myth Wukong. Other gameplay trailers revealed at the expo included Cairn, The Eternal Life of Goldman, and Dragon Ball: Sparking Zero.

 

Indiana Jones and the Great Circle also got its release date with the game set to be released on Xbox Series X/S and PC on the 9th of December while a PS5 version is currently in development and set to be released sometime in 2025. 

 

Another great opening night reveal was the trailer for Amazon’s Secret Levels, an animated anthology that focuses on short stories from popular video games that will stream on Amazon Prime Video on the 10th of December. With 15 episodes, the series will feature stories from games like God of War, Warhammer 40K, and plenty more.

 

Gamescom Winners

Another massive part of the Gamescom experience is the awards that are determined by both an expert jury of gaming professionals and the community. This year, Gamescom awards were presented in a total of 14 categories at the Gamescom studio powered by IGN. The big winner of the event was Monster Hunter Wilds which was recognized as the Most Epic and Most Entertaining game, as well as the Best Sony PlayStation Game.

Bandai Namco's Little Nightmares 3 was also awarded for its outstanding graphic and audio qualities and was named the Best Microsoft Xbox Game. 11bit Studios went on to secure 2 awards with Frostpunk 2 for Best Gameplay and Creatures of Ava for Games for Impact. Tavern Talk from German developer Gentle Troll was also honored as the Most Wholesome Game.

 

The Gamescom sustainability award honors an organization within the global gaming industry for its special commitment to sustainable values. This includes carbon accounting, emissions reduction, and collaboration with suppliers. This year, the award was presented by the UN's Playing for the Planet initiative and was given to Tencent Games for their transparent approach to outlining a detailed plan for achieving its ambitious sustainability goals with regular, data-driven progress reports.

 

The expo also presented The HEART OF GAMING Award which can be awarded to people, institutions, companies, concepts, or terms. This year, “Games protect democracy” was honored with the HEART OF GAMING Award as the expo recognized the special role of games in the protection and preservation of democracy. The award acknowledges the trend of civil society actors, memorial sites, and political institutions using computer and video games in various contexts to convey and protect democratic values.
