Just How Good Is The New Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1?
The mad scientists over at Qualcomm have done it AGAIN! Done what you ask? Only make the mini supercomputers in our pockets even better with their latest chip rolling out of their doors, the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1. To make the best chip yet they partnered up with TSMC, the world’s premier company for making these silicon chips, and they totally overhauled the Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 to be the best chip it can be.
So How Good Is The 8+ Gen 1?
On paper, three particular stats stand out: the CPU improvements, the GPU improvements, and the improved power consumption of the chip. For both the GPU and the CPU, Qualcomm and TSMC have improved their performance by a whopping 10%, all the while making the chip 30% more energy-efficient too. That may not sound amazing, but when you think about it, it’s pretty nuts. They have not only improved their chip’s performance, something that usually requires more power, but they also pulled it off while SAVING power instead, mind-boggling. They were able to pull this off thanks to the geniuses over at TSMC. They moved the whole process of designing and constructing the chips over to them and allowed them to do what they do best, make amazing semiconductor chips. With their help they made lots of small improvements in everything from the design to the construction method of the chips, creating an overall amazing performance improvement in this new chip.
What Does It Mean For You?
The improvements in CPU and GPU will give a smoother and more stable experience on the phone, be it your normal day to day applications or you favorite video games. The 30% drop in power consumption though will have more noticeable impacts for you. According to Qualcomm, this power consumption improvement can lead to to as much as an extra hour of gaming or scrolling through social media, even up to 80 extra minutes of streaming videos. So that’s awesome, I would love an extra hour of battery power while I’m gaming it up. Less power may also help the phone control its temperatures, which is also always a plust.
